Besom Broom

1- Dress out (take off any unwanted bits with a bill hook) Birch twigs.

2- Gather together twigs, trying to keep them bending inwards (to avoid a massive flare on the end of the broom).

3- Clamp the twigs together- James uses a hand made wooden clamp put into a vice to do this.

4- Tighten the gathered twigs with wire.

5- Put a point on the end of a hazel stick (or any fairly straight stick) with a bill hook and insert into the middle of the bundle of twigs.

6- James tied the end of the broom with a loop of sizel and added some nice looking lashing to hide the wire.
